« Lord, are there but a few people to be saved ? (Lk 13, 22)

Posté par diaconos le 8 mai 2019

Here is an important question : Lord, are there but a few people to be saved ?

And someone said to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’ —Luke 13:23-25

« Lord, are there but a few people to be saved ? « (Lk 13:22)  This frightening question asked of Jesus is sometimes addressed to us too and embarrasses us. How to talk about salvation? How can we reconcile God’s love for all people without exception with his respect for their freedom? If everyone goes to heaven, then don’t worry… If very few go, why make such an effort?

In the Gospel according to Luke, in chapter 13, Jesus refers each person to the decision he or she must make. God saves men for free. But he does not save them in spite of themselves, without their agreement. He gives them the freedom to oppose his benevolent gift.

God gives us the choice, the freedom to refuse the love he proposes. Jesus wants to make us responsible for our destiny and to make us understand it, he uses a very common image in the Bible: the kingdom of God is like a feast room. But, he adds: « Try to enter through the narrow door, because, I tell you, many will try to enter but they will not be able to ! «  ( Lk 13, 24)

It is therefore urgent to ask ourselves the question: « To win the sky, what is my fight? » On which specific points should I focus my attention and question myself? Time is running out, tomorrow it will be too late. Yes, one day for you for me, it will be too late !

How much time do we have left ? We should live every day as if it were our last. To go to the end of our life in heaven, we must want it, we must fight for it, we must choose Jesus !

It is not belonging to a group, a community, a parish, nor the practice of a few rites, attending Mass from time to time, that can give us an illusory assurance… It is the commitment of our whole person in following Jesus. And above all, let us not judge others. In our prayer, let us ask Jesus to help us to say Yes again.

If you have trouble believing, remember the story of the two discouraged travellers who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus. (Lk 24, 13-35) Also remember the vigorous affirmation of Peter who saw the Lord and proclaimed his faith in the resurrection (Acts 2, 14-28) : to announce the resurrection for Peter and the disciples is to bear witness that a man known to the Jews of Jerusalem for having made them speak of him, a man whom these same Jews by cowardice or indifference delivered to the Roman governor to be put to death, this man has risen by the will of God. May our hope in the resurrection be rooted in the very history of Jesus and the testimony of the apostles.

Amen
