Gospel Don’t worry about tomorrow

Do not worry about tomorrow: seek first the kingdom of God and its justice, and all this is given to you: tomorrow will be concerned about itself. Every day is enough with its pain.

Do not worry about tomorrow: seek first the kingdom of God and its justice, and all this is given to you: tomorrow will be concerned about itself. Every day is enough with its pain.

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink ; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes ? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life ?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes ? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith ?  31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat ?’ or ‘What shall we drink ?’ or ‘What shall we wear? ’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Mt 6, 25-34)

 Homily

In a relationship between two people, it is important to listen to each other, to let the other express what he wants to experience in the relationship. Thus, in the relationship with God, it is important to express our desires and to listen to God’s desires. In the Gospel, Jesus shares with us his desires for us : « Do not worry, do not worry about tomorrow ! « . The message is clear, the difficulty comes when it comes to living it. This may be one of the reasons why Jesus repeats his wish up to three times !

Jesus invites us to take some time to contemplate creation: to look at the birds, to observe the lilies of the fields: the birds do not sow or reap, and they find food, and the lilies shine with beauty. What Jesus wants to show us is that his Father, the Creator, took care, in creating nature, to ensure that plants and animals could have at their disposal what they needed.

God has thought of everything for their needs, how much more will he have thought to accomplish things in such a way that we can have what we really need! This extract from the Gospel invites us to trust, God never abandons us, he takes care of us.

Our needs are not the same as those of animals or plants. If not, what difference would there be between them and us? We need truth and love. God has given us the opportunity to seek him out freely. This is what sets us apart from the rest of creation. We must seek justice, truth, love as a priority. And the rest, Jesus tells us, will also come. What is most important for any person: to have as many material goods as possible, or to live in truth, justice and love ?

Let us pray

« Lord, teach me to live with you. There are many things I can’t control in my life, but the most important thing is that you always give me the opportunity to choose it : choose to live in truth, choose to love. Help me to surrender myself to you. «

Amen
