The Son of Man came to seek and save what was lost

From the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke

At that time, when Jesus entered the city of Jericho, he was passing through it. Now there was a man named Zacchaeus; he was the head of the tax collectors, and he was a rich man. He was looking to see who Jesus was, but he couldn’t because of the crowd, because he was small.

So he ran forward and climbed on a sycamore tree to see Jesus passing by. When Jesus arrived at this place, he looked up and said to him: « Zacchaeus, come down quickly: today I must go and stay in your house. » Quickly, he went down and received Jesus with joy.

Seeing this, they all recanted : « He went to stay with a man who is a sinner. » Zacchaeus, standing up, addressed the Lord : « Behold, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor, and if I have wronged anyone, I will give him four times more. »

Then Jesus said about him : « Today salvation has come for this house, for he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and save that which was lost. »  (Lk 19, 1-10)

Homily Zacchaeus ardent desire to see Jesus

Having heard of Jesus, and knowing how often he showed mercy for all the people of his despised profession, Zacchaeus, a chief of the Roman tax collectors, ardently wished to have the happiness of seeing him with his own eyes, and to at least retain the features of his physiognomy.

When Zacchaeus heard that Jesus had arrived in the city of Jericho (the famous city of the Old Testament), he sought to see him. Being prevented by his small size, he decided to climb on a sycamore tree (a large tree with low first branches).

He climbed very easily into that tree to climb up and see Jesus pass by. His efforts were rewarded (verses 1 to 4).

Jesus came to the tree, looked up at Zacchaeus and expressed his desire to come and stay with him (verse 5).

Jesus had read in Zacchaeus’ heart his ardent desire for salvation; he called him by name to respond to his nascent faith.

Drawing 2  « Zacchaeus, come down quickly, » said Jesus, today I must go and stay in your house. » Le Fils de l'homme est venu chercher et sauver ce qui était perdu. (Lc 19,10) dans Catéchèse zachee5

Zacchaeus was surprised to see, for the first time, someone good who cared for him, someone who loved him and offered to meet him, until he came to stay with him. Zacchaeus therefore quickly descended from the tree and hastened to receive Jesus with joy at home (verse 6).  The Son of Man came to seek and save what was lost. (Lk 19, 10)

Judge his joy! He was not a lost man : he was worth something in front of Jesus. Zacchaeus was therefore all turned upside down.

Conversion is this turning of the hearts and lives of people who encounter Jesus Christ.

The arrival of Jesus at Zacchaeus’ home caused the assistants to whisper.. Zacchaeus came before Jesus and declared his determination to give half of his possessions to the poor and to restore the fourfold to those he had harmed .

Zacchaeus wants to love and share like Jesus

Jesus in turn declared that salvation entered the house of Zacchaeus that very day, for Zacchaeus was also a son of Abraham.  He is the son of Abraham said Jesus, that is, of the race of those who hear God’s calls in their lives and respond to them with faith.

« For the Son of Man has come to seek and save what is lost » → The purpose of his coming is revealed to us in this double action, which Jesus accomplished with tender charity through his life and death: to seek and save what is lost. Amen
