From the Gospel of John

That same evening, on the first day of the week, the disciples had locked the doors of the place where they were, for they were afraid of the Jews. Jesus came, and he was there among them. He said to them :  « Peace be with you. »   After these words, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again :  « Peace be with you ! As the Father has sent me, so I send you ». When he had said this, he poured out his breath on them and said :  « Receive the Holy Spirit. To whomever you forgive his sins, they shall be forgiven him; to whomever you retain his sins, they shall be retained ». (Jn 20, 19-23)

Receive the Holy Spirit

« Lord, here I am before you, simply in silence, nothing is more important to me than to dwell in your presence. «   I make the words of this song my own, I can repeat them or hum them so that I am ready to meet God. I close my eyes and imagine myself under the Father’s benevolent gaze or in the company of Jesus or under the shadow of the Holy Spirit. I offer myself freely to God and I let Him enter unconditionally into my heart. Mary, you who persevered in prayer with the apostles while waiting for the Holy Spirit, prepare my soul to receive Him tomorrow.

Today, on the day of Pentecost, the fulfilment of the promise made by Christ to the Apostles takes place. On the same evening of Easter Day He poured out His breath upon them and said to them, « Receive the Holy Spirit » (Jn 20, 22). The coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost renews and brings to its fullness this gift in a solemn way and with external manifestations. Thus culminates the Paschal Mystery.

The Spirit that Jesus transmits creates in the disciple a new human condition and a sense of unity. When man’s pride rises to the point of standing up against God in wanting to build the Tower of Babel, God confuses the languages and they can no longer make themselves understood to one another. At Pentecost just the opposite happens: by the grace of the Holy Spirit, the Apostles are understood by people of the most diverse origins and languages.

The Holy Spirit is the interior Master who leads the disciple to the truth, who urges him to do good, who consoles him in his pain, who transforms him interiorly, and gives him new strength and capacity.

On the first day of Pentecost of the Christian era, the Apostles were gathered together with Mary, and they prayed. Recollection, a prayerful attitude, is absolutely indispensable for receiving the Holy Spirit. « Suddenly there came a sound from heaven like a violent gust of wind, and the whole house where they were standing was filled with it. They saw a kind of fire breaking out in tongues and resting on each one of them » (Acts 2, 2-3).

Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to preach courageously. These frightened men had become courageous preachers who did not fear prison, torture or martyrdom. It is normal; the strength of the Holy Spirit was with them.

The Holy Spirit, third Person of the Most Holy Trinity, is the soul of my soul, the life of my life, the being of my being; he is my sanctifier, the guest of my deepest interior. To reach maturity in the life of faith it is necessary that our relationship with Him be each time more conscious, more personal. In this celebration of Pentecost let us open the doors of our interior life.

At this time, I want to remember those people with whom I journey towards Christ, those relationships that bring me closer to God: a special friendship, a member of my family, my spouse, a spiritual guide. I want to remember them all. I want to thank the Lord for having put them on my path and to recognize what they bring to me: advice, example, listening,

In the same way, I can recognize and thank the special gifts that God gives me personally. Like any charism, they are gifts that God offers us for the salvation of our souls and the good of others.
