From the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Holy Luke
At that time, as Jesus was speaking, a woman raised her voice in the midst of the crowd and said to him, « Blessed is the mother who bore you in her, and whose breasts nourished you! « Then Jesus said to her, « Blessed are those who hear the word of God and burn it up! « (Lk 11:27-28).
Blessed are those who hear the word of God
And a certain woman, lifting up her voice from the crowd, said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the breasts that nursed thee. « Blessed are they that hear the word of God and keep it. «
This woman, probably a mother, who proclaimed Jesus’ mother blessed in this way, had understood what Jesus had said in the previous speech; she had understood that Jesus was the Messiah ; this truth penetrated her mind like a ray of light. In the emotion she felt, she immediately thought of the woman who gave birth to Jesus. The admiration she expressed betrayed her motherly feelings, rather than a well enlightened and firm religious faith.
Her feeling is good, but she speaks like a woman. (Bengel). It is inconceivable that, despite Jesus’ response, Catholic interpreters used this woman’s words to sanction the cult of the Virgin. This response is probably not a blame.
Rather, Jesus had grasped this movement with a sincere heart, but it was to raise it up to its true object, the word of God listened to and kept as a seed of divine life. He made the woman feel that she herself could be happy like the woman whose happiness she had just celebrated. Luke alone preserved this remarkable fact of Gospel history.
Mary the mother of Jesus
Mary was a first-century woman of Nazareth, the wife of Joseph, and the mother of Jesus, according to the canonical gospels and the Quran.
The gospels of Matthew and Luke in the New Testament and the Quran describe Mary as a virgin. In Matthew and Luke she is betrothed to Joseph. According to Christian theology she conceived Jesus through the Holy Spirit while still a virgin. She accompanied Joseph to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born.
According to Catholic and Eastern Christian teachings, at the end of her earthly life God raised her body directly into heaven ; this is known in the Christian West as the Assuumption. Mary has been venerated since early Crisrianity and is considered by millions to be the most meritorious holy of the religion.
She is said to have miraculously appeared to believers many times over the centuries. TheEastern and Oriental Orthodox,Catlolic,Anglican, and Lutheran churches believe that Mary, as mother of Jesus, is the Theotokos (Mother of God) There is significant diversity in the Marian beliefs and devotional practices of major Christian traditions.
The Catholic Church holds distinctive Marian dogmas, namely her status as the Mother of God, her Immaculate Conception, her perpetual virginity, and her Assumption into heaven. Many Protestants minimize Mary’s role within Christianity, basing their argument on the lack of biblical support for any beliefs other than the virgin birth (actually a virginal conception). Mary also has the highest position in Islam among all women. She is mentioned in the Quran more often than in the New Testament where two of the longer chapters of the Quran are devoted to her and her family.
