The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men
# The Son of Man is an eschatological figure in use in Judaic apocalyptic circles from the post-exilic period. This expression appears in the Book of Daniel. In the Gospels, it is the title most often used by Jesus when he speaks of himself. The interpretations to which it has given rise in Christianity have shifted the original meaning to the humanity of Jesus.
Summary The earliest evidence of this is found in the seventh chapter of the Book of Daniel, dated to the persecution of Antiochus Epiphanes, shortly before the Maccabean revolt (c. 160 BC). Already in Ezekiel, God addresses the prophet several times as « Son of Man », but no esoteric meaning is attached to the expression here. « I looked in the night visions, and behold, there came upon thy clouds as it were a Son of man; and he came to the old man, and they brought him near before him.
And there was given to him dominion, glory and kingdom, and all peoples, nations and languages served him. His dominion is an eternal dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingdom shall never be destroyed. (Daniel, 7:13,14 In Christianity: there are over eighty passages in the New Testament where Jesus of Nazareth calls himself ‘Son of Man’ (which is equivalent to ‘Son of Adam’).
He added, « The Son of Man must suffer many things, be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the scribes, be put to death and be raised on the third day. Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and that of the Father and the holy angels. (Luke 9:22 and 26 According to the first verse of the third chapter of the Book of Malachi, the eschatological coming of God is to be manifested by that of a final messenger.
The Jewish tradition expected Elijah to return, the Christian tradition entrusts this messenger role to John the Baptist. The Formgeschichte method proves that we can only go back as far as the testimonies and confessions of faith of the first Christians about Jesus. The early Christians identified the « Son of Man » with the glorious Christ whose parousia they expected. This early Christology was therefore attributed to the Hellenists: Jesus, the crucified one, was enthroned in Heaven as the Son of Man and will (soon) manifest himself as such through his eschatological coming. This theme is found in Revelation. In later Christian theology, the title « Son of Man » was understood to refer to Jesus’ humanity, not his divinity.
From the Gospel of Luke
43 And all were amazed at the greatness of God. When everyone was in awe of all he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples, 44 « Open your ears to what I am telling you now: the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. » 45 But the disciples did not understand this word; it was veiled from them, so that they did not perceive its meaning, and they were afraid to ask him about it. » (Lk 9:43b-45)
Humility and tolerance
Jesus insisted to his disciples that he had to be handed over. They did not understand and were afraid to question him. They wondered which of them would be the greatest. Jesus presented them with a little child and said that whoever received this child received him and God. The smallest is the greatest. John confessed that the disciples prevented a man from casting out demons in Jesus’ name because he was not one of them. Jesus said that they should not have prevented him, because he who is not against them is for them.
All the miracles of Jesus, having a charitable purpose, were works of both power and love, and were a manifestation of these two divine perfections. for you, my disciples, who must distinguish yourselves from the multitude and not share their carnal enthusiasm at the very moment when all were in admiration of what he did. Luke thus placed this prediction of Jesus’ sufferings in immediate connection with what preceded ; Matthew and Mark made it coincide with Jesus’ return to Galilee.
He who had just revealed with as much power as love the greatness of God delivered into the hands of men ! What a contrast ! What proof that his sacrifice was perfectly voluntary! The word of the cross is always a mystery to us, if it is not folly or scandal. The disciples did not understand it, but it was hidden from them by a dispensation of God, so that they did not understand it.
Their ignorance was not purely intellectual, it had moral causes ; they understood Jesus’ words enough to be very saddened by them, but in their fear of suffering, they were afraid to ask him about it. If they had had the courage to question him, Jesus would have instructed them more fully.
