The Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Luke

Every year, Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Passover festival. When he was twelve years old, they went on a pilgrimage as was their custom. At the end of the festival, as they were returning, the young Jesus stayed in Jerusalem without his parents knowing. Thinking that he was in the pilgrim’s convoy, they travelled a day’s journey before looking for him among their relatives and acquaintances the Law, listening to them and asking them questis, and all who heard him raved about his understanding and his answers.

When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, continuing theionr search.   After three days they found him in the Temple, sitting among the teachers of the Law, listening to them and asking them questis, and all who heard him raved about his understanding and his answers.

When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him : « My child, why have you done this to us ? See how your father and I have suffered in looking for you ! «  He said to tem : «  : « My child, why have you done this to us hem : « How is it that you sought me ? Didn’t you know that I must be with my Father ?  »

They did not understand what he said to them. He went down with the Tm to Nazareth, and there he was subjected to them. His mother kept all these events in her heart. But Jesus grew in wisdom, stature and grace before God and men, (Lc 2, 41-52)

Jesus devoted himself to his Father’s business

If Luke’s account  is true, it has been said, how can Mary not understand that her son must be entirely devoted to his Father’s business? This is to misunderstand the situation Mary found herself in after the twelve years during which her son had developed in an insensitive manner.

Despite his wisdom, Jesus had never expressed his special relationship with God so clearly; the word he had just spoken was a new revelation to Mary that only gradually penetrated her understanding. It was even necessary for it to be so, so that Mary could retain her position as the mother of Jesus.

Are not all parents surprised when one day they discover that their children have ceased to be children? The parents of Jesus, however much they had been warned, must have felt this surprise with redoubled force.   Many interpreters see in this word: my Father, an allusion and an opposition to the one Mary pronounced : your father and me. NothinSomeg could be more improbable than such a thought which, even indirectly and discreetly expressed, would have been out of place in these circumstances.

His awareness of his unique relationship with his Father, far from being in opposition to this humble obedience, was rather the source of it. Jesus was thus the model of childhood, just as he has remained, for all ages, the accomplished type of a human life without sin and developing in the absolute good.
