Jesus before Pilate
A people to celebrate the Passover and institute the Lord’s Supper. Did Jesus not replace the Passover lamb with the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world and who is the true object of the Lord’s Supper ?
From these words » I will drink no more from the vine « we can conclude that Jesus did not drink from the cup at the Last Supper. Matthew places these words after the institution of the Lord’s Supper. In Matthew’s and Mark’s Gospel it says: this is my body ; the words : which is given for you are a peculiarity of Luke’s Gospel, whose account agrees with Paul’s (1 Corinthians 11? 24), except that he replaces the word given with the word broken.
These last words, omitted by Matthew and Mark, are also quoted by Paul, who repeats them twice and adds in reference to the cup : » as often as you drink it « . This makes it clear that Jesus did not want to celebrate the Lord’s Supper only with his first disciples, but that he instituted it in his Church as a memorial of his person and his work for all time.
Jesus, who separated himself from his own whom he loved, wanted to remain and live among them. The Zwinglian teaching that the Lord’s Supper is a memorial of Christ and his death is based on a word Jesus spoke when he distributed the symbols of his sacrifice, but it does not exhaust the meaning of this sacrament, as the other words of institution show.
This term corresponded exactly to the symbolic action Jesus was performing at that moment in the breaking of the bread, announcing that the Saviour’s body would be broken in suffering and death. The Lucan phrase is synonymous with: given up for you, i.e. handed over to death, as the context and situation clearly show (Gal. 1, 4 ; 1 Tim. 2, 6 ; 1 Tim. 2 , 14).
The New Testament contains two accounts of the institution of the Lord’s Supper which, though in complete agreement in thought, differ in some respects in their wording: first, those of Matthew and Mark, which do not use the same expressions; second, those of Paul and Luke, which are not even a literal rendering of each other. This unity in diversity is one of the characteristics of the whole Gospel.
The apostolic tradition has never been cast into a uniform form. Of the two formularies, that of Paul and Luke is in some respects the more complete ; on the other hand, the Apostle solemnly declares that what he writes about the institution of the Lord’s Supper he received from the Lord.
These words of Jesus were spoken immediately after Judas had received the Lord’s Supper from his hand ! An argument broke out among the disciples over the question : » Who is the greatest ? « Jesus told them not to be guided by the example of the kings of the nations and the principle of the triumph of power. In the new society they formed among them, the greatest will be like the least, following the example of Jesus who was among them in the attitude of a servant.
The ambition that spurred them on in what was legitimate will nevertheless be satisfied : To those who persevered with him in his trials, Jesus promises to shape the kingdom in their favour : They will eat at his table and, sitting on thrones, judge the twelve tribes of Israel.
He prayed for Peter that his faith might not fail ; he commanded him, when he was resurrected, to strengthen his brothers. Peter agreed to go with Jesus to prison and to death. Jesus then told him that he would soon fall. Jesus reminded them of the simple beginnings of their calling, when he sent them out without any means and yet they lacked nothing.
Now their condition will change: they will have to equip themselves with provisions and means of defence, for the word which foretold that their Lord would be placed among the evildoers will be fulfilled and his earthly destiny will come to an end. The disciples handed Jesus two swords. Jesus said to them : » Enough ! «
t was not the first time that the disciples were preoccupied with thoughts of pride and ambition. The reason for the new quarrel that arose when they sat down to eat could have been the place of honour that each claimed for himself, or the fact that none wanted to perform the foot washing that was customary among the Jews before every meal.
If this was the reason for their dispute, then it was all the more likely that the act of profound humility with which Jesus washed everyone’s feet confused them. Jesus was a servant all his life, but it is likely that he was referring especially to the slave-like service he had just rendered to his own by washing their feet.
All the persecutions, the taunts, the hostilities, the sufferings he had to endure from the world and which his disciples shared with him. The Son of God shared all his privileges with his disciples. To sit at his table in his kingdom is a picture of intimate communion with him and the fullness of heavenly life and joy. To sit on thrones and participate in the judgement of the world is to be associated with the power and glory of the Saviour himself.
