From the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to John
It was after the death of Jesus. On the evening of the first day of the week, when the doors of the place where the disciples were staying were closed for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, « Peace be with you! « After this word he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again: . « Peace be with you! « As the Father has sent me, so I send you, I send you also.
And when he had said this, he breathed upon them and said to them: « Receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you forgive, they will be forgiven; whose sins you bear, they will be kept. Now one of the Twelve, Thomas, called Didymus (i.e. Twin), was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples sais to him : « We have seen the Lord ! » But he said to them, : « Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, unless I put my finger in the mark of the nails, unless I put my hand in his side, I will not believe ! »
Eight days later, the disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, while the doors were locked, and he was there in their midst. He says : « Peace be with you ! « Then he said to Thomas : » Put your finger here and see my hands ; put your hand here and see my hands ; put your hand in my side : Stop being an unbeliever. » Eight days later, the disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, while the doors were locked, and he was there in their midst. He says: « Peace be with you! » Then he said to Thomas : » Then he said to Thomas : » Put your finger here and see my hands ; put your hand here and see my hands ; put your hand in my side : Stop being an unbelieve.
Be a believer. Then Thomas said to him, « My Lord and my God! « Jesus said to him, « Because you have seen me, you believe. Blessed are those who believe without having seen. There are many other signs which Jesus performed in the presence of the disciples which are not written in this book. But these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. (Jn 20, 19-31)
Jesus appears to the disciple
His hands pierced and his side with the wound of the spear. Jesus, knowing how weak his disciples were and how difficult it was for them to believe in his resurrection, was content to give visible and tangible proof of it, but at the same time made it clear that this was not what constituted faith, which is a free act of conscience and heart.
There is something solemn about the repetition of this great and sweet word: Peace be with you. Seeing the disciples convinced and joyful, Jesus wanted to assure them of this supreme good, peace, which for him was even more precious than joy. The present moment was admirably chosen; for Jesus clothed his disciples with their apostleship after his resurrection, of which they were witnesses before the world.
.The more Thomas had resisted faith in the risen and glorified Jesus, the more he was penetrated by the divine light that flooded his soul. The entire knowledge, the charity of Jesus seized him, humbled him. At that moment, all the declarations of Jesus about his divinity, which had not been able to overcome the doubts of Thomas, became equally clear to him and, after being the last to believe in the resurrection of Jesus, he was the first to call him by a name that no one else had yet pronounced: « My Lord and my God !
It was Jesus in whom this disciple, having become a believer, recognised his Lord and his God. Jesus, far from rejecting this homage as an act of idolatry, approved it. Thus John’s account shows us the disciples gradually coming to faith in that great truth which his Gospel was intended to demonstrate: the Word was God.
Jesus established for his kingdom this great principle: « Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed ! « . Faith is a moral act of conscience and heart, independent of the senses; all the objects of faith belong to the invisible world; the Christian Church, for nineteen centuries, has believed in Jesus Christ and his resurrection on the same apostolic testimony that Thomas denied.Jesus established for his kingdom this great principle: « Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed ! « .
Faith is a moral act of the conscience and heart, independent of the senses; all objects of faith belong to the invisible world; the Christian Church, for nineteen centuries, has believed in Jesus Christ and his resurrection on the same apostolic testimony that Thomas denied. It seems that during these eight days there was no further appearance of Jesus, although the disciples had gathered often, as if to wait for him.
As soon as Jesus spoke his gentle word of peace over the disciples, he spoke directly to Thomas. He knew his condition, for he knew for himself what is in man. He condescended to give this disciple all the proofs he asked for. If a Pharisee had laid down these conditions as Thomas did, he would have obtained nothing; but to a disciple, hitherto tried and tested, nothing is refused.
Jesus acknowledged, approved and confirmed it as Thomas expressed it with a heartfelt expression. Why did the other disciples not believe in the resurrection of Jesus because they saw it? Thomas found himself in a particular situation that gave him every reason to believe. Ten of his fellow disciples, whose intelligence and good faith he could not suspect, had said to him with joy: « We have seen the Lord, and he, denying this testimony, had demanded a material demonstration of the senses.
Jesus laid down for his kingdom this great principle: « Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed ! Faith is a moral act of the conscience and of the heart, independent of the senses, all the objects of faith belong to the invisible world, the Christian Church, for nineteen Jeus, has believed in Jesus Christ and in his resurrection on the same apostolic testimony that Thomas denied.
he term « signs » applies primarily to Jesus’ works, but does not exclude his speeches, for « Jesus’ testimony to himself, » says Weiss, « is a kind of commentary on his miracles.
