Sono venuto a gettare fuoco sulla terra - il Portico

I have come to cast a fire on the earth

# Marc Rastoin was born on 30 April 1967. He is the son of Jean Rastoin (1932-2009), an engineer, and Jacqueline Rastoin (1934-2008), a translator and essayist, and the brother of Cécile Rastoin, from the Carmelite Monastery of Montmartre. Marc Rastoin graduated from the Institut d’études politiques in Paris in 1988 and graduated in theology in 1999 under the direction of Paul Beauchamp. On 14 October 2002, he defended his thesis in biblical theology at the Pontifical Urbanian University in Rome under the direction of Jesuit Jean-Noël Aletti.

His thesis focused on the way St Paul, in the letter to the Galatians, was able to construct his argumentation, both for Jews who knew the Scriptures and for Greeks versed in rhetorical philosophy. The following year, he published his thesis, which was well received. Jean-Pierre Lémonon expressed a few reservations that did not detract from the great merit of the work, which made it possible to better penetrate the Pauline universe.

Following this thesis, Marc Rastoin was sent to the Centre Sèvres – Facultés jésuites de Paris, where he taught the Bible so that everyone could discover the riches of the Scriptures. He was also interested in cinema and contemporary literature. He was passionate about history, Judaism and the Jewish reading of the Scriptures. Since 2007, he has also taught at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome (introduction to St Paul and the synoptic gospels). He was interested in exegetical research on St Paul and everything related to research on the historical Jesus and how he understood his messianic mission. He was also interested in the theology of the evangelist Luke and in Jewish-Christian dialogue

From the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Luke

At that moment Jesus said to his disciples : « I have come to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I must receive baptism, and how eager I am to receive it! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For henceforth five persons in a family shall be divided : three against two and two against three; they shall be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law. (Lk 12:49-53)

I have come to cast a fire on the earth

« I have come to cast a fire upon the earth; and what shall I desire, if it is already kindled? « (Lk 12, 49) Interpreters have taken care to find a connection between this part of the discourse and the one that precedes it. I have come; this expression, frequent in St John, is therefore also found in the Synoptics; Jesus uses it with the awareness of his pre-existence. What is this fire that he came to cast upon the earth, where it did not exist before him, where it would never have been lit without him? According to many exegetes, this fire is nothing other than the agitation of spirits and divisions of which Jesus spoke.

But would we then understand that he so ardently desired this fire to be kindled and that he brought to it the great and sorrowful thought of his suffering and death? But why not see in it the new life of faith, of love, of zeal, whose source Jesus opened and whose devouring power was to burn, purify or consume all that was exposed to his action ? This divine action caused divisions and struggles between those who were influenced by it and those who rejected it out of unbelief. Jesus explained how this division would occur in practical life and even in the family.
