Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year B

From the Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Mark

At that time, as Jesus was on his way, a man ran up, got down on his knees, and asked him :  » Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life  ? » Jesus answered him :  »Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life ? »  Jesus answered him :  » Why do you say that I am good ? You know the commandments : Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not hurt anyone, honour thy father and thy mother. »  » Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life ? » Jesus answered him : « Why do you say that I am good ? You know the commandments : Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not hurt anyone, honour thy father and thy mother. » 

The man replied : « Master, I have observed all these things from my youth ». Jesus looked at him and loved him. He said to him :  » Only one thing you lack  : go, sell what you have and give to the poor. and give to the poor; so you will have treasure in heaven.  » T hen the young man heard this, he became sad and went away, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples : « ow hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God » 

The disciples were astonished at these words. Jesus spoke again, saying to them :  » My children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God ! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God », way, for he had much wealth. Peter began to say to Jesus : «  Behold, we have left everything to follow you » Jesus said :  »Amen, I say to you, no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, mother, father, children, or land, for my sake or for the sake of the gospel, will fail to receive a hundredfold in this age, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and land, with persecution, and in the age to come eternal life. » ((Mk 10,17-30)

Then Jesus looked at his disciples and said that it would be difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of God. The rich young man, the danger of wealth, the future reward The three evangelists tell this story after the blessing of the children. Some characteristic and important details are peculiar to them. His disciples were even more astonished and asked each other.  » Who can be saved ? Jesus told them that it is impossible for man, but all things are possible for God. » The disciples were astonished at these words. Jesus said that every sacrifice made for him and for the gospel is rewarded now and in eternity, but many of the first will be last and the last first. Jesus left the house where he had stopped and set out to continue his journey. With these words : « He ran and fell on his knees, Mark dramatically describes the scene and shows us the man’s eagerness to get an answer from Jesus to the question that was tormenting him, as well as the deep veneration that Jesus inspired in him. «

De l’Évangile de Jésus Christ selon Luc

En ce temps-là, ésus disait à ses disciples : « Imaginez que l’un de vous ait un ami et aille le trouver au milieu de la nuit pour lui demander : « Mon ami, prête-moi trois pains, car un de mes amis est arrivé de voyage chez moi, et je n’ai rien à lui offrir.”

Et si, de l’intérieur, l’autre lui répond : “Ne viens pas m’importuner ! La porte est déjà fermée ;
mes enfants et moi, nous sommes couchés. Je ne puis pas me lever pour te donner quelque chose.”
Eh bien ! je vous le dis : même s’il ne se lève pas pour donner par amitié, il se lèvera à cause du sans-gêne de cet ami, et il lui donnera tout ce qu’il lui faut.

Moi, je vous dis : Demandez, on vous donnera ; cherchez, vous trouverez ; en effet, quiconque demande reçoit ; qui cherche trouve ; à qui frappe, on ouvrira. Quel père parmi vous, quand son fils lui demande un poisson, lui donnera un serpent au lieu du poisson ?

Si donc vous, qui êtes mauvais, vous savez donner de bonnes choses à vos enfants, combien plus le Père du ciel donnera-t-il l’Esprit Saint à ceux qui le lui demandent ! » ( Lc 11, 5-13)

Efficacité de la prière

Jé­sus en­seigna l’ef­fi­ca­cité de la prière, soit par des ana­lo­gies, soit par des contrastes, comme dans la pa­ra­bole. Cette pa­ra­bole ren­ferme à la fois une pro­messe et une exhortation, se­lon que nous consi­dé­rons les deux hommes mis en scène. La pro­messe pour­rait se tra­duire ainsi : «  Si un homme, par pur égoïsme et pour se dé­li­vrer d’un solliciteur, lui ac­corda sa de­mande, même à minuit, com­bien plus Dieu, qui connaît tous vos be­soins et qui est amour !  »

Quant à l’ex­hor­ta­tion, c’est le sol­li­ci­teur lui-même qui l’eut fait en­tendre par son exemple : Puisque, dans les cir­cons­tances les plus dé­fa­vo­rables, mais pres­sés par vos besoins vous ne crai­gnez pas d’im­por­tu­ner avec in­sis­tance un homme que vous sa­vez si peu gé­né­reux, pour­quoi ne faites-vous pas de même en­vers Dieu qui, dans sa mi­sé­ri­corde infinie, est tou­jours prêt à vous ac­cor­der bien au-delà de toutes vos prières ?

« Et moi, je vous dis. »  Ce fut par ces mots que Jé­sus in­tro­duisit une ad­mi­rable ap­pli­ca­tion de sa pa­ra­bole, à la­quelle il em­prunta les images et les ex­pres­sions mêmes dont il se servit. « Demandez, cherchez, heurtez », c’est là ce que fait l’­homme de la pa­ra­bole ; il vous sera donné, vous trouverez, il vous sera ouvert, telle fut son ex­pé­rience ; com­bien plus cer­tai­ne­ment sera-ce la vôtre au­près de Dieu ! En­core une preuve plus in­time et plus per­sua­sive que Dieu exauce la prière.

Parmi les dons que l’en­fant de­manda à son père, Mat­thieu ne dé­signa que du pain et un poisson : ce furent les pro­vi­sions que l’on prit d’or­di­naire pour le voyage  : « Jésus leur demande : « Combien de pains avez-vous ? Allez voir. » S’étant informés, ils lui disent : « Cinq, et deux poissons.  » (Mc 6, 38) ; Luc ajouta un œuf, qui fai­sait sou­vent aussi par­tie de ces pro­vi­sions.

« Notre hôte nous re­met, au dé­part, de quoi faire notre re­pas : des pains (je dis des pains, et non du pain, car on les fait ici fort pe­tits, des œufs durs, comme toujours, plus quelques pois­sons frits. On voit que la nour­ri­ture fut ab­so­lu­ment la même que du temps de Jé­sus.’ » Félix Bovet, Voyage en Terre Sainte,

À ces trois ali­ments furent op­po­sés : une pierre, cruelle iro­nie ; un serpent, très dan­ge­reux ; un scorpion plus nui­sible en­core. Qui fut le père qui ré­pon­dra par de tels dons à la de­mande de son en­fant ? Et cette ques­tion de­vient plus frap­pante quand, à à la place d’un père quel­conque, Jé­sus nomme le Père cé­leste.

« Vous qui êtes mauvais » : Re­mar­quable té­moi­gnage du pé­ché ori­gi­nel. ( Bengel)  Quel contraste avec la bonté et l’a­mour du Père qui est du ciel ! D’a­près Mat­thieu, Jé­sus dit : « Votre Père don­nera des biens, ou de bonnes choses, à ceux, qui les lui de­mandent. Cette ex­pres­sion est plus simple, et plus en har­mo­nie avec l’i­mage qui pré­cède, que les termes em­ployés par Luc : donnera l’Esprit-Saint. Mais d’autre part, le Saint-Es­prit est le plus pré­cieux des dons de Dieu et le gage de tous les autres.
